A Word about Resumes:

Many employers, particularly large companies and public institutions, distribute your resume to their departments over Intranets. In these cases it's important to prepare two versions- one in a format that a computer can scan, and one to carry to interviews for people to read.

The University of California (San Francisco) provides excellent information on resume preparation, but its best article on scannable versions can't be reached with a single click. Here's how to get there:

Go to UCSF: Human Resources. Click "Job Search". Then click "Applying: Submitting Your Resume". Scroll down the Applying page until you reach "Preparing the Ideal Scannable Resume".

 

Schools (K-12)

schoolmatch.com evaluates all US public and accredited private schools. Report costs $34 to $68.

ed-data.k12.ca.us and schoolwisepress.com evaluates California public schools.

greatschools.net evaluates schools in San Mateo, Santa Clara counties, California.

Homes

realtor.com is the web site of the National Association of Realtors with more than 1.2 million listings.

homeadvisor.com is Microsoft's challenge to realtor.com. It initiated service in July, 1998, and is estimated to currently host 300,000 to 400,000 listings.

rent.net lists more than 2.5 million rentals in the US and Canada. Also provides relocation resources.

homescout.com compiles listings from other Web sites

homes.com has listings from Homes and Land magazine, which showcases properties in the thousands of communities in which the magazines are distributed.

GetSmart Inc. searches for the best home loan, matching borrowers with lenders. GetSmart is a free service, unaffiliated with any specific lender or financial institution.
